The Ice Bell cometh to Brau
The Ice Bell cometh to Brau
31st October 2006
Scotsman Beverage Systems, one of Europe’s leading suppliers of drink cooling and dispense equipment, has introduced a new, improved, high impact point-of-sale ice bin, which will be on show at Brau 2006.
The Ice Bell is a 1m tall, illuminated, open-topped unit distinctively shaped like an inverted conical or soda bell glass. It is designed for a wide range of uses from an eye-catching alternative to the traditional chiller cabinets used in shops, supermarkets and off-licences through to premium brand support at promotional or sporting events.
The Ice Bell is filled with water that is made into compacted ice flakes, which cascade down in a fountain from the top of the unit to chill the bottles and cans. As the ice melts, it is recycled to form fresh flakes. The whole cycle of operation is designed to add an element of theatre to attract attention and stimulate impulse buying of cans and bottles of chilled soft drinks, lagers or cider.
The bin can be supplied in any colour and its rounded shape provides a large surface area for maximum branding opportunities, including bespoke signage if required.
The Ice Bell was initially developed at Coca-Cola’s European innovations centre. Scotsman Beverage Systems then took it on to develop the second generation, with improved design, simplified technology and easier maintenance.
Richard Oakley, Scotsman Beverage Systems’ European director of brands dispense, said: “We’ve taken the original concept and design and, with the help of Enodis UK’s refrigeration expertise, we’ve re-engineered the Ice Bell to make it cleaner, more practical and more reliable.”
Easy to change filters using micro filtration and silver ion technology have replaced a chlorine-based solution as a simpler and more efficient cleaning system. The new filters ensure the recycled ice remains bacteria free for a minimum of three months. They have passed rigorous lifetime and challenge testing, where common bacteria, including e-coli, were deliberately introduced into the ice and neutralised by the filters.
The design of the Ice Bell has also been improved to make it more practical. For example, it can easily be taken apart and rebuilt so it can fit through a standard door and is simpler to install.
The Ice Bell has also been simplified technically, with fewer moving parts to maintain, making the refrigerated display bin more reliable and easier to service. More user-friendly electronics have been introduced with warning lights to alert the retail outlet’s staff to empty, clean the unit and change the filters.
In addition, the Ice Bell’s internal illumination has been changed from neon to white fluorescent lighting, a less expensive option which gives a better quality light, improving the display bin’s branding and impact. Scotsman Beverage Systems has also increased the bin’s internal insulation to minimise its energy consumption.
Nigel Mobbs, Scotsman Beverage Systems’ European soft drinks sales director, said:
“The Ice Bell looks fantastic and is a real technical innovation as well. We think it could really help to generate impulse buying of chilled drinks in the convenience retail sector right through to maximising brand impact at premier events.”
